Can a gas insert go into the fireplace I already have?

Usually, but the flue decides. Pre-1975 stucco and ranch homes here have open masonry fireplaces with clay flue tile liners. A sealed direct-vent insert needs its own vent run inside that flue. The tile is not the vent. The damper plate comes out or gets clamped, and cracked tile or a quake-cracked crown shows up during the liner run.

Tract homes from the 1980s through the 2000s are a different job. Those are factory-built metal fireboxes in a framed chase. A prefab only accepts units listed for it. Read the metal label inside the firebox; model and clearances are printed there. That label answers most of the question before anyone arrives. Replacing the unit usually means opening the chase and setting a new chase cover. The old one is often rusted through, which is where rain has been entering.

Gas side: sediment trap and reachable shutoff. Pipe must be sized to the appliance input rating. An old log lighter stub is frequently too small for a modern insert. Unvented units face restrictions in California, so verify before ordering.

Log conversions in open masonry are simpler. Damper clamped open, embers placed as the manufacturer specifies. Burner ports must stay clear. Wrong ember placement causes most sooting complaints. Unlined single-wythe chimneys need relining first.
