What actually goes into putting an insert in your fireplace?

More than sliding a box into the opening. An insert needs its own flue. On the open masonry fireplaces common in pre-1975 stucco and ranch homes here, that means a stainless liner run the full height of the clay tile flue, sized to the insert's collar. The damper plate usually gets cut out or removed to pass it. A block-off plate seals the old throat above so the chimney stops pulling heated room air. Skip that plate and the unit underperforms all winter.

Measurements decide everything. Rear firebox width, depth, and opening height, not the front width. Then mantel and side clearance measured from the new faceplate, which sits forward of the old brick.

Factory-built prefab fireboxes in 1980s and 2000s tract homes are a different job. A wood insert only goes in if it is listed for that firebox. Usually it becomes a sealed direct-vent gas insert, coaxial vent up the framed chase. Fix the rusted chase cover and cap first. Rain in a chase ruins new steel fast, and coastal air is unforgiving.

Gas inserts also need power for the valve and blower. Older fireboxes have no receptacle nearby. On unreinforced masonry with open crown cracks or a spalled single-wythe stack, the chimney gets repaired before anything is lined.
